| 1 Care and Handling for Libraries and Archives | One day training course Schedule & Costs **Please express interest for possible courses at different dates or places |
| A major cause of damage to books and archives is poor handling. This can result in a lower life expectancy for collection items – resulting in the need to buy replacements or undertake costly conservation work. The benefits of instilling a culture of good care and handling within your organisation are many. Such a culture extends the life of unique and irreplaceable material and enables access to collections. During this course we use a varied learning approach, mixing experiential and theoretical exercises that include demonstrations, samples, visual aids, practising techniques, a detailed examination of an item and writing a condition report. Throughout the course we also refer to the new Standard for the Storage of Records and Archives 2007 (Public Records Act 2005) and discuss how the requirements of this act may affect you. The overall framework of this standard is the management of risks to archives and records in storage. The course includes: care and handling of books and other archive materials exploring the PRA Storage Standard (2007)requirements identification of bookbinding styles and how a book is constructed techniques and equipment to reduce damage to books and archives introduction to archival protective enclosures - storage conditions and boxing introduction to associated terminology damage and repairs exhibiting archives, wrapping and packing opportunities for discussion and specific questions. | Course fee $220.00 + GST per person. 10% discount for 2 or more attending from the same institution. 9.30am - 5.00pm.

| 2 Care and Handling for Records and Archives | One day training course Schedule & Costs |

This new course has been developed in response to a request for a course with a more records and archives focus. Many New Zealand archives and records repositories now have to comply with the Standard for the Storage of Records and Archives 2007 (Public Records Act 2005). This course explores care, handling and storage practices as outlined in the standard. The benefits of understanding these requirements are that important records are cared for to allow retention and access for their designated lifetime. Another benefit is that unique and irreplaceable archives remain in good condition and can be accessed safely by future generations. During this course we use a varied learning approach, mixing experiential and theoretical exercises that include demonstrations, samples, visual aids, practising techniques, a detailed examination of an item and writing a condition report. The course includes: - care and handling of records and other archive materials

3 Disaster Preparedness and Response for Libraries & Archives | Two day training course Schedule & Costs |
The 1931 earthquake in Hawke's Bay and the Florence floods in 1966 were both major disasters. It is much more common, however, that we are faced with a minor disaster: a burst pipe, fire sprinklers accidentally being activated, local flooding, a leaking roof or an insect infestation. Such incidents can cause serious damage and loss to library and archive collections. Fortunately, with training, a prepared plan and organised teams, it is possible to reduce the risk of irreparable damage and loss. Included in this course are: - realistic mini salvage exercise x 2
- disaster plans - developing and implementing a plan
- exploring the requirements of the PRA Storage Standard (2007)
- defining a disaster - and introduction to risk assessment
- disaster salvage handling procedures
- prevention: minimising risk
- materials and equipment
- team work
- health and safety
- networking
- discussion and opportunity for specific questions.
